Sipping on Mexico: A Guide to Mexican Drinks

Mexico is known for its delicious cuisine. However, not just the food makes this country a gastronomical paradise. Mexican drinks are just as famous and equally impressive in flavor and variety.

From tequila to mezcal, Horchata to atole, Mexico has a drink for every taste bud.

Here’s a guide to some of the most popular Mexican drinks.

Tequila

Tequila is the most well-known of all Mexican drinks. This distilled spirit is a mixture of the blue agave plant, which grows in the Jalisco region of Mexico.

There are three types of tequila:

  • Blanco
  • Reposado
  • Añejo

Blanco is the purest form of tequila, with no aging. Besides, reposado is between two and twelve months, and añejo is aged for at least one year.

Mezcal

Mezcal is another popular Mexican spirit that is a mixture of the agave plant. However, unlike tequila, which can only be made from blue agave, mezcal can be made from any agave plant.

It has a distinct smoky flavor and is often enjoyed as a shot or in cocktails. Mezcal is typically consumed with slices of orange and worm salt.

Horchata

Horchata is a refreshing drink made from rice, almonds, cinnamon, and sugar. It is often presented over ice and is a popular drink during hot summer.

Besides, Horchata is a great non-alcoholic option for those who want to enjoy a traditional Mexican beverage.

Atole

Atole is a traditional Mexican drink that is typically used during the winter months. It is a mixture of masa (corn flour), water, cinnamon, and sugar.

There are many different variations of atole, including chocolate atole and vanilla atole.

Jamaica

Jamaica is a popular Mexican drink made from hibiscus flowers. It has a bright red color and a tangy, slightly sweet flavor.

Michelada

Michelada is a famous Mexican beer cocktail perfect for those who love a little spice in their drinks.

It has beer, lime juice, hot Worcestershire, and salt. Furthermore, Michelada is typically present over ice in a salt-rimmed glass.

In short, it is a great way to enjoy a cold beer with a little kick.

Paloma

Paloma is a famous tequila-based cocktail made with grapefruit soda and lime juice. It is often served over ice and is an excellent option for those who want a refresher.

It is a fruity cocktail without the sweetness of a margarita.

Tepache

Tepache is a fermented pineapple drink that is popular in Mexico. It is made from pineapple, brown sugar, cinnamon, and water and is often served cold.

Furthermore, it has a slightly alcoholic content due to the fermentation process. However, it is typically low enough to be considered a non-alcoholic beverage.

Agua fresca

Agua fresca is a refreshing drink from fresh fruit, sugar, and water. Many variations of agua fresca include watermelon, cantaloupe, and cucumber.
